This should be a lot easier than the last one.

Find the determinant and inverse of the following matrix:

1 2 1
1 3 1
1 4 4

Hah, I learned how to do that stuff like FOUR years ago.

And yet I don't remember. The system failed me.

I could do these in like 5 seconds flat back in HS.

I'm with Xenn.

What exactly is the point of this? I mean the equation and forumlas itself, do they even ever apply to anything?

Answer to question 1: To solve this.

Answer to question 2: Yes. Most advanced math is made as a response to a question that is posed that can't be handled by current mathematics.

Aside: Even neglecting its applications, math is a field worthy of study in its own right.

Very true, but what good would this one specific type of math ever affect my life? It probably won't, therefourth I don't care.

It affects every aspect of your life. The car your drive. The clothes you wear. Even the coke you drink. That bottle's volume, surface area, thickness and more were meticulously calculated to maximize utility and minimize cost. Notice that some plastic bottles are getting thinner? That's calculus.
