NEC and toshiba showed a prototype to a new kind of optical cd reader to PC.
The reader is called "Blue Laser" and is based on a new technique calld AOD ( Advcanced Optical Disk ), that means tomorrows new disc allows you to store the whole 20GB. The new disc is competing with Sony's "Blue Ray":
Throw away your DVD - Blu Ray is here!
Well not really but almost. The next geneations cd media is still under work. Blu Ray is developed by nine companies including Pioneer and Philips. A normal DVD can usually store 4.7GB or 133min. While a Blue Ray can store a outstanding 27GB(!) or 13 hours of media. Actually a normal DVD can store almost 15GB ( double sided with double layers ) but the problem is that todays cd burners cant handle that.
Anyway it will take a few years before those format is in your PC or below your TV. Those new formats will surely be the new defacto too.
