I'm not a "computer guy" but I think what Grav and AC are trying to say is that the term "56K" doesn't apply to DSL. It only applies to dialup. DSL is a hell of a lot faster than 56K.
I think what he means by 56k DSL is something like iDSL rather then aDSL where the haul distance can be longer, but the speeds are lower.
The clocking thing is usually a web site that you hit that estimates your throughput level based on how you communicate with the web site and how the devices between the two of you respond. I have typically found these sites to be rather generous with their estimates.
