It's a side scrolling, beat 'em up superhero action game. Only it's the best one ever made.

You play as Joe, an average nerd that obsesses over movies as his chosen geek-vice. He and his girlfriend, Silvia, are at the movies one night, when suddenly, one of the villains pulls Silvia into the movie, forcing Joe to follow after her. After entering Movie Land, Joe is confronted by the movie's hero, Captain Blue (who also happens to be Joe's favorite superhero) and is given a V-Watch that allows him to transform into the superhero Viewtiful Joe (pictured in my avatar). As a superhero, Joe gains the ability to use "VFX" powers. His three main VFX abilities are:

Slow - Slows time to a crawl, making his attacks stronger, allowing him to dodge and deflect bullets with his attacks and cause all kinds of other cool effects.

Mach Speed - Joe begins moving at blinding speed, allowing him to string together giant combos and do all kinds of other cool shit.

Zoom - Zooms the camera in. While zoomed in everything Joe does is altered in some form. Example: if you Zoom in while Joe is in midair, he'll dive straight down into the ground causing a giant shockwave. If you Zoom in while punching, his punches become a blur doing massive damage to the enemy.

Suffice it to say, this is not the best explanation I could muster. If you want more details, go to cube.ign.com and read their review. If you own a Gamecube, you absolutely must own this game. Period.
