If you go to various sites, they say that the sony playstation was able to play SNES cartridges, but sony changed the system to the Playstation X (PSX) which is why the X is in the acronym. I think it was also called the superdisc or something.
go to www.howstuffworks.com and in the search bar look up playstation. A list will come up with different topics, and one will say, How does the playstation work?, click that, then on one of the pages it says that it was made to play snes games.
