Without D&D most of the mmorpgs and games that are based on the concept would not exist.

Very true, most peope misunderstand D&D or end up starting with gay people. To me, it is as fun as the people you play with

It's actually quite fun, when you actually have a War going on, and tactics is actually important...

You don't think sword fighting with other people in a one-on-one basis or in a general melee would be at all interesting?

No to the swords, and the fingers can easily be broken.

Penguins right. D&D inspired alot of fantasy games out there. For example: Neverwinter Nights, Ultima Online.

It wasn't created by the webmaster, you tool. It was created by some annonymous vBulletin developer, it's on by default with an installation of vb3. Chruser and WetWired are just too lazy to switch it off.

Can't say for any other games, but the entire Forgotten Realms series (Ice Wind Dale, Baulder's Gate, Neverwinter Nights... etc) Are based on either 2nd or 3rd edition rules.

LOTR came before DND. DND takes much from LOTR.

Dispite of what you may believe, D&D does not have annoying dwarves that sing all day. D&D does not have wizards that just swing their swords around.

LoTR blows the nuts.

It gave a common setting and a basis for the Fantasy world to take flight from. Tolkien was a help with that, but he was hardly irreplacable.

If you look at D&D and LoTR, not much is in common. Just the creatures who have been made up way before both. LoTR had a magic ring, a wizard who did nothing and some bad guy who never faught but in the prologue and a few other magic items. Good book/movie but nothing to what D&D gave.
