Yes, Sovereign, there was a project named Star Wars which did exactly what NGM is talking about. As far as we know it, it was unsuccessful, but then again, the public didn't know about Stealth Bombers until about 30 (or was it 50) years after the fact..

Point being, it wouldn't surprise me if the U.S. had defensive capabilities to destroy intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM's) in outer space, before they were much of a threat.
