I knew nothing about Jinx, and after hearing some of his qualities, I still thought Auron was the better man. If a Battle goes on without people defending their choice, there will be some cases where the weaker may win. After all, this isn't a contest on who probably would win, it is a contest on who can show who will probably win and why they think that. The more convincing the better obviously.
