You probably have the automatic virus protection enabled for MSN Messenger, but in most virus scanning software there is a warning that says you have to have a certain version. (I have Norton AntiVirus 2003 and it only supports versions 4.6 and 4.7 of MSN messenger, even though I have all the updates installed.)
So go into the properties for your virus program and disable auto protection of MSN Messenger.
If that isnt' the problem then I can't think of anything else that could help aat the moment.
