D&D

I was just wondering who here plays D&D(not a video game with D&D title or w/e... D&D 1-3edition!!). If so, any DMs? How many people play with ya? What style do you play(Hack~n~slash, Story, etc)

I play Hack~n~slash but it always has a good story and mild puzzles. I am the DM and I play with 4peopel totale. MarkiX is one of them, and my cousin and other friend other two. I play 3ed, I liked 2ed but 3ed has a way to cover a lot of stuff and don't have to make up yourself. Right now they just fnished their first dungeon and are lvl7s I beleive. MarkiX and friend forgot to right down XP and shit and put them behidn so I punished them(im harsh, you don't listen then my demon comes out). I say things with good hints, and if they don't catch them or listen, oh fuck well... right? MarkiX is pure Rogue, my cousin is pure Cleric, and my friend is pure Fighter. The basic 3 classes needed to have a well rounded group. The tank, healer, theif(and the sneak dmg is great).

No bullshit here, I wan't only people who have seriously played/play D&D, none of you guys like... yeah I seen this dude play it, or I heard, or blah blah. Spam free plz

I play AD&D, 3rd Edition and 3.5

Mostly Hack 'n' Slash, unfortunately, since my 2 of my roommates were more interested in finding loopholes in various Spells/Psionic abilities and utterly raping the combat system.

I suppose I have yet to play a true AD&D session, but that's ok.

I haven't DM'd anything major, and most of the characters I like to play are either Rogues or Rangers (I tend to think like a Rogue would).

Yeah, we are 3.5, but I just say 3. I am all rogue too, but MarkiX can't DM me, I just get around everything and he has to have backup story plans and stuff lol. So I decided to put that complex thinking into DMing... sadly I can't use my full potential because its hard enough for them to figure out stuff now :P

I mainly do hack~n~slash because my friend and cousin are new and markix is fairly new... as I to 3.5(I use to play 2ed). This is a way for us to learn how character development works and what is best for what. We haven't used a grid, but I plan to. Soon my cousin will have area spells and such will be going on, I need to know where everyone is and what they are doing. The hardest thing about DMing is finding out what creatures will be perfect, not to hard and not to easy and I have to do it in advance, so I have to figure out what lvl they will be when they get there. Now that they are higher level, it will slow down making it easier for me.

We never really used a grib or anything either.

I used to play the Battletech board game, so I'm ALL about strict enforcement of rules and exact locations.

That shit always drove me nuts.

I used to play D&D in 6th grade until we just sorta stopped. It was actually pretty damn fun because the DM was the most creative person ever and the results were extremely interesting.

I've GMed Shadowrun on a few occasions, but I've never DMed D&D.

Personally, I'm not entirely sure what type of campaign I like better. If it's D&D, I think I prefer Hack n' Slash, because the combat system has a lot to offer. If it's Shadowrun, I definitely prefer story, because the 6th World of Shadowrun is by far the coolest setting of any RPG I've ever played. Plus, I find it significantly more interesting than Ravenloft or Greyhawk.

Well right now I am going to give one of the three a special role in the story line, as like they were lead here for a reason. They will have some special abilities, nothing to unbalance the fairness to much. I would say who out of the three got picked by luck of the die, but MarkiX goes to these forums and may stumble across this.

I'll tell more about it once its over. I might even start scanning dungeon maps I made and post them after they finished it.

I work hard as hell on the maps... I assign each room with a number, each secret with S#, and treasrue T#, # = is just the number it is like S1, S2. For traps I just put the DC then DMG. On another peice of paper I have a Room Section and I have detail about the room, its usually in my head, but if encounters they are written and the treasure from them is already roled and written. I do this to speed it up. I also need to write the XP for them. I can just look it up with no problem but speed is great for the players and makes me a better DM. I'm giving them major hack~n~slash but slowly working bigger stories and puzzles. They are still learning and getting the hang of it. I am still also getting a feel for how good each thinks. So far my cousin is smartes, then MarkiX, then other friend. So, I need to give MarkiX and my friend more puzzles to get them thinking more. MarkiX gets really mad about me because I am really picky with what you say and listening. If he enters a new room or hall he must say he is searching for traps/secret doors otherwise he isn't.

Death: I have my own rules... if you die even if you are ressurected by a scroll/spell you still loose 50*level XP. If you die and have to be ressurected by me it is 200*Level XP and loss 10% of gold and if you have 50% or more gold value in items than you do in gold you loss 5% gold and 1 item per 8 items you have and isn't usually gear like you normal Armors and Weapons. If everyone dies well then time to roll new chars eh? I am still wondering if I should... since I do work hard on stories and maps wouldnt want to waste them, but then I have to put fear of death in them.

I've been trying to get people together to do a GWAR-themed Scumdogs of the Universe D&D campaign, but all of my friends continually bow out of it.
