if anyone needs a music maker program, click here

I recently came across a program called anvil studio, that lets you create music files(mainly midis but also wave files). you can record stuff, and place them into the music file itself. you can compose music in a few different ways, like on a sheet of music, as dots on a page(percussion), you can press keys on a virtual piano keyboard or use guitar strings to make notes. It can even teach you how to read music! best of all, it's not a demo or shareware! It's free! even to upgrade! the installation file is only 3.34 mb. I'll try to find the address to it again. I think it's on download.com. if you or I can't find it, I can send you it through email if that is easier for you. anyway, I thought it would be nice for all you developers to have this for your games under development. I know I would. good luck with your development!

P.S. This isn't an advertisment. just so you know.

Ah, the good old days.

I remember using Anvil before Sibelius. :)

You can also find it on www.rpgwolfpack.com ya know.

The only thing I didn't like about Anvil is how hard it was to make each separate instrument play together in a track. I tried using it for my GCSE Music Compositions, but it just wouldn't work... :p

Should I move this? I feel like actually do some moderating today..... the verdict is: MOVED

WetWired 2005-10-25 11:05 AM

This isn't something with open source code, and unlikely to be used in web design. MOVED BACK

Sum Yung Guy 2005-10-25 11:07 AM

Ha but you didnt move it 'back' it was originally in RPGMAKER!!! I win.

Medieval Bob 2005-10-25 11:42 AM

I used to use Cakewalk. It was pwn.

undeadzombieguy 2005-10-25 12:21 PM

Wouldnt this be better in media?

I'll be trying this program sometime soon cause it sounds pretty cool.

sciencekid 2005-10-25 01:11 PM

actually lenny, something's wrong with www.rpgwolfpack.com. I couldn't access it. so you say that you use "Sibelius" now? ok then, where do I get it?

P.S. I stuck this in the rpgmaker2003 section because the developers might not look anywhere else to find music makers for their game.

Lenny 2005-10-25 03:49 PM

The site is working fine for me.

Sibelius is a proper music program. It's better to use it if you really know your way around Music. If you want it then the only way to get the full version is to either buy it or illegally download it.

Atm the latest version I have been able to download is 3.1. The newest version is 4 but I can't seem to get it.

I know that 3.1 lets you save as MIDI's (writes it in note form), not sure about 4.

sciencekid 2005-10-25 04:57 PM

dang. I was hoping it was free. how much is the latest version? are the upgrades free? thanks a lot for the info, lenny.

Lenny 2005-10-26 04:02 AM

You'll have to search long and hard to find something that is free and matches Sibelius.

The latest version is Sibelius 4 and is around $600. You can get minor upgrades for each version (for example, a new playback function or a new MIDI set), but can't upgrade from Sibelius 3.1 to Sibelius 4.

Hrm, intresting.
I've always considered toying with a music creating program..

Lenny 2005-10-26 07:25 AM

If you're a beginner and start to use Sibelius, then you have as much chance as a snowball in hell.

Sibelius is primarily for writing out your music in note form - sheet music. And it does it abnormally well.

If you just want to use it to create MIDI's then it is a real waste of space and time. Instead use what sciencekid has recommended. It's a good program for just churning out single instrument MIDIs. There are probably other programs that can make many instrument MIDIs, and I believe you might be able to do in Anvil, but oh well... :p

So, recap:

Beginners (who know nothing or very little about the theory of music and what not) - Use Anvil
Musicians (who know some of the theory to all of it) - Use Sibelius

Any usable links with anvil? Ive been meaning to learn to make music on the computer, because im sick of using copywrited music in the movies I make. If I was to submit them into a film festival, I would be fucked.

Plus, I choose not to use copywrited music, because 99.999% of the time it sounds like my groin. Though when im first using the music program, it probably will too, but still.

Anyways, any links?

sciencekid 2005-10-27 12:41 AM

yes actually there is. I finally got around to finding the original site. and here it is!
--> http://www.anvilstudio.com/upgraden.htm <-- sorry about the wait also, I think it can only produce midis though. i'm not sure about waves though. plz check to be sure

Lenny 2005-10-27 06:29 AM

It is only MIDI.

The chances are that you'll be able to find a program somewhere that will allow you to save and/or export tracks as wavs, or you could try and find a MIDI to wav, or to MP3 convertor.

I've never been able to remember whether it's converter with an "er" or with an "or"...my spell checker usually sorts it out.

I wonder if it's possible to create a spell checker for the forums...it'd sure help with all the typos... :p

If I understand you correctly, you mean other tracks. and if so, you go up to the "track" menu go to "create" and then choose which kind of track you want to create. the tracks will play together in sync and order to create, as you put it, "layers". hope that helps! if not, feel free to try to explain your question again.
