Socketing items

I've heard alot of garbage on how to socket items but never any confirmed stuff. Decard Cain says 6 gems to make a socket item from a normal, that probably works but what about rares? I've heard anything from 3 soj's to 1 perfect, to 5 perfects and a soj, and 3 perfects and 2 soj's. So... obviously I'm a little confused. What is the right combination to make a socketed rare/unique?

The socket recipe only works for rare items (so they say)

Socket works in all items... it works the same way as the socket quest...

Anyone know about an item called "Ball of Flesh". I SWEAR I SAW ONE in early D2, a few months after it came out. The guy said you make it from ears. But... what ELSE? And Uh I don't think it actually does anything, alot like the gem button in the chat.
