I know that the farmer took them to have sex...but what on earth has it got to do with Peppermint Pills?

The joke is that he didn't know what they were, but he knows that they taste like peppermint, thus he tried them. It's a slightly more subtle way of saying, "What did the doctor give the bull?" "I dunno but I took 10 of them!1"
