Go into one of your computer-controlled character's "Strat" menus and change his battle setting from Automatic to either Semi-Auto or Manual. Then, just make sure that your friend is using the controller that's hooked to the same slot as the character he wants to use. Example: your friend wants to use Kratos, and Kratos is the second person in your party. Change Kratos' setting to Semi-Auto or Manual and then make sure your friend is using the #2 controller.
