You're (Un)Remarkable!
Reply
Posted 2007-06-14, 11:31 AM
We started this program at work called the "You're Remarkable!" program. Basically, every one of the employee's at Meijer get an addition to their badges that has a card in it (Officially part of our dress code, as well.), the back of the card has room for four signatures, and every time a Team Leader see's us doing a "Remarkable" job, they give us a signature. Once we get four signatures we drop it in a fishbowl in the back and a name is drawn every Monday. The person who has their name drawn gets a 25 dollar gift card to Meijer, as well as the person who has the most cards filled out.

Examples of "Remarkable" service includes:

- Greeting and Thanking every customer we see.
- Providing fast and friendly service to a customer.
- Helping out a fellow employee (They had to get Receiving in on this somehow...)
- Assisting a Team Leader.
- Getting a customer compliment in the presence of a Team Leader, or a customer complimenting you to a Team Leader.

Thus far, I've done all of thee above even before the program began, and as well as since I've gotten my badge. And, thus far, I've received no signatures. Basically I see this as a way to bribe us into doing the jobs that we as employee's in a "customer service" based job should already be doing...And I don't agree with it at all. I know I'm a great employee, and a simple thank you for my actions suffices for me, which I do get often. This program...it's like a glorified popularity contest that's being done chain-wide in this company.

We as employee's should not have to be bribed to do what we should already be doing. Granted, it does work for some people, but it's rather offending for me. Since it started, I actually feel less appreciated as an employee than before.

So, instead of fretting over signatures, I wrote "Do Not Sign." on the back of the signature card. I will not be accepting signatures. I refuse to be a part of this.

Sounds like you aren't a team player, I don't blame them for not signing for you.

Methinks it's a sham of a way to get your employees to work hard. Personally I think employees who work hard without bribes such as this system should be the ones that get promoted or get a raise and the other people should get the shaft and have to work longer hours since the quality of their work is less than the hard workers.

I think your company is retarded.

If they need to pull a bullshit idea like this out of their asses just to get their employees to do their fucking job, maybe they should start laying off.

Honestly. If i ever own a business like that, i would hire people that are going to do their job. That's why it's called work. You dont go to have fun, you go to be your manager(or team-leaders) little bitch for 8 hours. It's not like you arent getting anything out of it.(not talking to you, jessifer, this is more or less me flaming your shitting co-workers)

I just wish everyone saw things the way I did with this subject.

Wow i didn't think another company would do the same thing.
The manager wanted to do something like it.
I was like "hell no, are you crazy?".
She said things and insisted on the idea so i threatened to quit (lol)
She stared and said, i'll think about it.
But if she ever does it i'll still quit on her.
even though it'll hurt to like lose my post and be payed 5$ again.

Any boss that lets you get away with threatening to quit is a suckass boss. If any of the people working for me were to say they were going to quit if I don't do X, I'd show them to the fucking door with a smile.

Hah... you think it's that easy.

My boss changed his entire pay scheme for the company because I told him I was leaving. When you have the right person doing the right job, you will take care of that person. It would take 3 of our current people to replace me. He cannot risk losing me over something so silly and trivial.

I let him still think he's in charge though.

I would rather take on 2 jobs than have someone working for me thinking they can control me with threats.

It wasa hardly a threat. I told him I was leaving. He told me I couldn't. We reached an agreement.

Well that's slightly different than someone threatening to leave unless their wants are met.

Honestly Slaynish, you're underestimating the American population. Finding people who will work hard because it's their JOB is rather difficult, especially in retail or other industries that typically rely on hiring young people with little job experience.

The sense of self-entitlement that is being drilled into us daily by advertisement and business transactions only promote this sort of behavior. It doesn't occur to people that they're hired to work hard, they show up to collect a paycheck and to do as little work as possible.

(I realise this is slightly hypocritical as I'm posting from work, but I always drop this if I see it impacting my work). :P

You won't get something unless you put your foot down.

And if you get fired, well, there's always better jobs out there.

Damn. I fucking hate corporate mandates that are intended to improve retail efficiency. They always seem to be designed from the perspective of someone whose head is lodged firmly in their own lower intestine.

Not nearly as bad as I used to get working for Dish Network, but I actually did Tech Support for them. I'm basically just routing calls here at Cox, it's gloriously boring.

Sad but true, while it should be people's responsibility to put their back into their work, so to speak, you'll be hard pressed to find people that are going to do that, so in most cases an incentive is needed.
