SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2007

Scenario:
Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.

1957- Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2007- School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to
jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for
traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario:

Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.

1957- Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.


Scenario:
Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.

1957- Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal . Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2007 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.


Scenario:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.

2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.


Scenario:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.

2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario:

Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.

2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.

2007- BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Joh nny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Oh how accurate, Let me share you my story.
In sophmore year of Highschool I had this friend Named Abraham, A big fat mexican. He had been my friend for a few years, had a few verbal fights, the usual. About Mid Semester he started Calling me Gay, I took it as a joke at first and went on with my day. This went on for about two weeks before I confronted him outside Biology class. I asked him why he kept calling me gay, Only to get '' 'Cause you are.' '' as a response, He had two buddies with him asking me if I wanted to fight, I'm not an idiot, Three on one are not the odds I like. The teacher came up to me and asked me if we had a problem, I said "Not right now, but we will when the lunch bell rings." Going into class I waited for the bell, while he constantly threw paper wads at me, The bell rang and I got infront of him, my back to him just wanting to go to lunch. Then I felt a hard push on my back and was shoved into the hallway and into a wall, smacking my head against the wall. Standing up a tackle him and started punching every inch I could manage, dotting an eye, breaking his glasses, and some other things, The teacher eventually broke us up. Now.. in 1957 It would have been understandable why I started punching the kid. But in 2006-7 this is what I had to endour. Got Three days suspension, $112 dollar court Cost, My mom removed me from public school at my request. Went infront of a judge and was charged with, Disrupting the public or some thing like that. I pleaded Guilty to the Disrupting the Public and also Said it was Self Defense, Seeing as of how I was shoved into the wall first. However the judge said that it only mattered who Qoute Unqoute "It doesn't matter who shoved first, It's who swung first." And I was set to have a public 'Trial By My peers.' Which means my sentence was determined by Highschoolers. As fucked up as that is initself I appeared infront of the Jury of my peers and they had me explain to them what happened and why. I explained I had been ridiculed by this guy for a couple of years. and that a man can only take so much before he snaps. I told them that he initiated the arguments and the fight. What happened was I recieved Six months probation, Ten hours of community Service, and I had to do some Kids Of The Community once a month for the Length of my probation BECAUSE I was homeschooled and wasn't getting to Interact with other people as well as I would have been able to in Public school. Now, do you think all this would have happened Fifty years ago? And when ever the jury of prissy teachers pets were discussion our sentences, The teacher who led the army of teachers pets was patting the fat mexican on the back telling him it was ok, While me and my mom were givin the cold shoulder.

That blows though, Coriander. 6 months probation over a fight... wow. If you and somebody have a problem and a shove is thrown, you should be able to duke it out without interference from the 'powers that be.' So fucking ridiculous.

No kidding. Hell, there's even been a huge difference from when I was in high school, to the kids now which was only about 2-3 years ago.. That does suck though...
