Arreat Summit agrees, Tiaras and Diadems can have 3 sockets, but Coronets and Circlets can only have 2. He has a Pic of a Coronet, but Death has a pic of a Diadem.

Magic items if they use sockets quest can only get 2 sockets. Because your Diadem is have surfix of Jeweler, that's why is 3 sockets.
