Nintendo Heads Talk DS
By Matt Leone
5/13/2004

At a press roundtable event Wednesday evening, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideki Konno, and Takashi Tezuka spoke about Nintendo's latest portable hardware, the Nintendo DS. Miyamoto kicked off the presentation by clearing up a rumor few people believed in the first place: that he had a heart problem and was leaving Nintendo. He said this is far from true, and he is happy and working hard, laughing at the rumor as he spoke.
Miyamoto did the majority of the speaking, though Konno mentioned he worked on Metroid Prime Hunters, Nintendogs, and Mario for DS, while Tezuka said he worked on many of the DS tech demos.

Miyamoto made many general comments about the DS, noting that its wireless connection support is an evolved version of the connectivity between Game Boy Advance and GameCube. Nintendo apparently learned its lesson with the difficulty and expensive price of getting all the technology together for games that used the GBA/GC connectivity, so the DS does wireless connections. There has been no official word on if DS will connect to the GameCube, though with the Game Boy Advance slot on the DS, it seems like it may already exist in some form.

Talking about the length of the DS games on display at the convention, Miyamoto claimed the company decided to make them all short so they could be experienced by as many people as possible at the show, and that this short length should not be a problem with the final released products.

In the question and answer session, Tezuka confirmed that the final name for the Nintendo DS (which is a tentative title) will not have the term "Game Boy" in it, and Miyamoto told the audience not to worry about the stylus causing scratches on the screen. Miyamoto also mentioned that he likes playing Wario Ware DS with a cotton swab, which could be a device players might want to use as a backup if they lose their stylus.

I TOLD you the Nintendo DS would rock.

If anyone hasn't checked out the specifics on this thing yet, you'd better do so poste haste.

Click-Ola.

It's got a touchpad, wireless connectivity, online and LAN features, 3D graphics processing, two front-lit TFT screens, four face buttons, a friggin' microphone and dual cartridge slots for DS games and Gameboy games. This thing is a fucking wet dream.

I'm more glad than I can explain that the DS is as badass as I was telling everyone it would be. Now, I've got a great handheld to look forward to and I don't look like a jackass. Party, bonus!

yup, at first when I heard about it I thought it would be some sort of upgraded game boy advance. But now I've seen the screens and stuff it looks more like a portable game cube. This looks like its gonna be a great thing but I wonder how this does vs the also upcoming psp.

Added to my wishlist ^_^

Yea, but Sony hasn't released much about the PSP, so i will wait and see. The DS looks sweet, but im loyal with Sony, so its got first dibbs if it has good stats and such.

Tyrannicide 2004-05-14 02:10 PM

sounds cool, but this isn't a old console, its new. It should be up in general gaming or gen discussions.

It does sound very nifty, but i bet Sony still has some plans up their sleeve for the PSP.

Sovereign 2004-05-14 02:55 PM

Moved.

For some reason, irregardless of if the PSP has better graphics, ill probably go for the Nintendo DS. I have a playstation 2 and a Gamecube. The ratio of GC to PS2 games is about 7:1. I don't really like most of the games that comes out for the ps2. If sony continues their trend of games for the PSP, rest assured that i will never buy it.

Threads Merged.

Thanatos 2004-05-15 08:31 AM

7:1, wtf are you talking about? If anything, it's 7:1 the other way...

iceman887 2004-05-15 09:04 AM

seriously, for me gamecube does not have as near as good games as ps2

HandOfHeaven 2004-05-15 12:49 PM

Um pricecheck? It looks pretty sweet but didn't see an estimate/actual price.

Raziel 2004-05-15 10:56 PM

I agree with Sov on this one. I own over 30 Gamecube games and about 6 PS2 games. It's all a matter of preference.
