Well here's how I look at it: the 50+ billion that they've already lost in market share as a corporation has got to hurt, obviously; However, like you said, when it finally bottoms out, prices are going to be dirt cheap and some clever investers may have a chance to really turn out a profit over the next 10 years or so. Let's be realistic, BP isn't going to go anywhere. They're one of the top profitable companies in the entire world. They can afford to set aside 20 billion for the relief fund for the companies and people affected in the gulf.
I think it's still way too early to really know how badly they will be affected. The guestimations of oil that has been spilled keeps going up, and when it's all said and done, the amount they are going to have to pay may double or triple.
