Australian-born actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence in what authorities say is a possible drug-related death. He was 28.

A police spokesman said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the apartment that is believed to be his home.

The housekeeper went to tell Ledger the masseuse had arrived and found him dead about 3.30pm New York time (0730 AEDT), Paul Browne said.
Ledger was an Oscar nominee for his role in Brokeback Mountain and had numerous other screen credits.

The Perth-born actor had a two-year-old Matilda, with former fiancee and Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams.

US television network NBC reports his body was found surrounded by pills.
"We are investigating the possibility of an overdose," Browne said.
Ledger and Williams split in September last year.

Ledger played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in Monster's Ball and had starring roles in A Knight's Tale and The Patriot.

He was to appear as the Joker this year in The Dark Knight, a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins.

Heath Ledger dies at 28.. pretty sad indeed.

Actually, heard it on the news last night right around the time the story was breaking, and I guess now apparently he may have accidently overdosed on sleeping pills that we're mixed or something, i'm sure we'll find out soon enough :(

Story Highlights
NEW: Former girlfriend, daughter leave Sweden after learning of actor's death

NEW: Oscar nominee's "Dark Knight" role disturbed his sleep, he told press

Ledger's family calls his death "very tragic, untimely and accidental"

No note was found and there was no indication of foul play, police say

I love how they assume that it was 'accidental'. I would like to have forensic proof that it was actually accidental. Furthermore, people are saying that his character, "The Joker", could have caused him to go insane. I'm sure he'd tell us, but he's not in the condition to do so.

The Patriot is a badass movie.

He was the highlight of Lords of Dogtown as far as I was concerned. The documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys was a much more entertaining watch overall, though.

Westboro Baptist Church is picketing his funeral because he once played a gay character.

I fucking hate Westboro Baptist Church.

I don't give a bag of intimate fucks about Heath Ledger dying. I mean, that sucks for Heath Ledger and everyone he knows but you are not Heath Ledger or Heath Ledger's posse so stop acting like its Pearl Harbor. Also I noticed that no one at all was talking about Heath Ledger before he died, and now suddenly everyone is The Biggest Fucking Heath Ledger Fan Dot Com. You know what? YOU fake fucking Heath Ledger fans are the reason he died. If even one of you bastards had been there to take that bullet or sleeping pill or whatever for him, he might still be here today, waxing one of his eyebrows for the Batman premier.

See! He does care! He's just trying to hide it all with anger.

I thought it was a shocking story, so I posted it. 28 is an extremely young age to die at.

By the way, who are you talking to that's acting like this is similar to Pearl Harbor? Certainly not anybody here. Nobody's taking it that hard. I think you're delusional.

So the Phelps family, who protest soldier deaths, have an open letter to Heath Ledger's family a letter to disclose the location of the funeral so that they may protest it. Apparently, he's evil since he portrayed a homosexual character in one of his movies. They even claim that Heath Ledger would want the Westboro Baptist Church to protest his funeral:

If Heath himself could come back to life for a brief period to speak to his loved ones on earth, he would lift up his voice in a hideous scream, to wit: "Listen to Phelps! For god's sake, listen to Phelps!"

For those who would like to read the letter:

People die even younger all the time.

------------

And that Westboro thing is wrong on so many levels. I would not want some preacher yelling over my dead body about how people will be damned by an all-benevolent God for a hormone imbalance.

Demosthenes
2008-02-03, 05:29 PM
hormone imbalance.

If you're implying that homosexuality is caused by a hormone imbalance, I'd like a citation, please.

Atnas
2008-02-03, 08:20 PM
There is no citation - the cause of homosexuality has not yet been determined.

I wasn't claiming that was the only cause, as homosexuality is thought to be caused by a number of different things - most commonly a mixture of biological, social, and psychological circumstances.

There is no actual proof for hormone imbalances causing homosexuality. However the traits that homosexuals possess hint at the presence of a dominant sex hormone which - in heterosexual cases - is not prevalent. One might look at a lesbian and notice she is more masculine. Masculinity is caused in part by testosterone. The same may go for gays - they are more effeminate. Ergo, more estrogen.

I'm not making broad generalizations, as each case differs.

We have really only been studying homosexuality for a short time, as it has recently become more common.

My thought on the prevalence of homosexuality in recent times (and possibly metrosexuality) is that pesticide usage is a key factor.

I love being proven wrong; it's some sort of academic masochism.

Do me in.

Are you aware that the Greeks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Warren_Cup_BM_GR_1999.4-26.1_n1.jpg) and Romans had widespread homosexuality as well, far before the prevalence of pesticides?

Atnas
2008-02-03, 08:32 PM
They promoted homosexuality in their armies.

Demosthenes
2008-02-03, 08:32 PM
No, I wasn't trying to prove you wrong. I just generally keep up with such things, and hadn't heard that a hormone imbalance caused homosexuality.

You may be interested in checking out information on a gene called xq28, however. If you're interested, I could get you pdfs of some papers.

Sorry.

I'd love to read them. Just by looking at the wikipedia entry on it, I can tell it isn't confirming evidence of anything, as the results of the data collection are not consistent. But I think that illustrates the idea that there is no one definitive cause.

Well, an update has been announced, it's officially stated that an accidental overdose was the cause of his death.

Medical examiner's office: "Manner of death is accident"

"Brokeback Mountain" star, 28, died January 22 in a New York apartment

The 2005 film won Ledger an Oscar nomination for best actor

Colleagues say actor had been suffering respiratory ailment

I hate that they call it an "Accidental overdose" his ingestion of those drugs was NO accident, he knew he was taking drugs and did it anyway, don't gte me wrong I liked the guy, the movies I saw him in were epic and he was a phenominal actor, but he didn't accidently take 6 different drugs

Thanatos
2008-02-14, 02:19 PM
I hear that. There is no such thing as an accidental overdose, IMO.

maybe in the rare circumstance that you take the wrong pills for some sort of illness, you know,,,, You need to take 4 of your diabeetes pills but somehow 30mg oramorph made it into your scrip bottle

Is it so hard to believe that he might have taken medications that he didn't know would have bad interactions?

I mean, I'm not saying I believe it or not, but it's kinda dumb to assume that just because he's famous it had to be "intentional" overdose. Shit happens, even to famous people.

Honestly I couldn't give a shit why or how he died, but regardless of whether or not it was intentional, he's a human, and it doesn't necessarily make him a good OR bad human.

Grav
2008-02-14, 09:07 PM
That's a fallacy, because every human is a bad human.

Adrenachrome
2008-02-14, 09:18 PM
I'm not saying he knew he would die from the drugs, I'm just saying it was no accident that he took them, it's simply death by overdose, not intentional overdose, not accidental overdose, just overdose

Atnas
2008-02-15, 08:49 PM
If every human is a bad human then that brings the standard of human down. Every human can not be a bad human because the standard is constantly being lowered.

oh lord it's a time paradox D:
