View Full Version : An idea for allowing residency

What would you guys think if we decided to make anyone who wants to be a resident of our country serve some time in our army? I think that if this were how things go, it would help both our nation and the people attempting to become a part of our nation. I don't think I've ever heard the idea raised before by anyone else (though I'm sure it has been.)

How would you react? What would you think about it?

I know that in certain countries that you have to participate for a year or so. I think it may be in line, but then again that sort of goes against the land of freedom, right? Forcing them to be in our army and then giving them freedom? It's almost like having indentured servants, but for our military.

Perhaps forcing them to fight for our, and in essense their freedom would be the better thing to do.

Maybe it wouldn't even need to be required. Just make it an "easier" way to become a legal resident. Faster, I suppose.

I could see that happening. They get to choose the red or blue pill. That's a good point though, that they have to earn their freedom by fighting for it.

It worked during the slave days, except we gave them land I believe.

The problem with that is that, to my knowledge, you need either work or school lined up to apply for residency, and they aren't likely to wait for you to serve your time...

Besides that, it would make it easier for enemy spies to infiltrate our military, if it was common practice for outsiders to join.

As if you can't find out anything these days.

I could see terrorists exploiting that bigtime..

Good idea though

Foregoing the sarcasm of my previous post, I do think there could be benefits to such a concept. It has the potential to promote cultural adaptation and education for newcomers. Nevertheless, I do see this as an easily exploitable program which terrorist cells could use to gain access to training and equipment which may otherwise be restricted.

I think being placed with the National Guard Reserves would be more appropriate, and I wouldn't be opposed to it being an OPTION, except for the points already brought up regarding it being an easy-out for terrorist attacks.
