Linux question...

I was just wondering, which would be a better Linux distro for someone a bit below intermidiate level of linux knowledge?

FC3, Debian, Ubuntu, Suse 9.3, Mandrivia, etc? I just have a hard time deciding and can't stand trying them all. Takes so much time. Its hard to decide.

I was looking at Ubuntu, I have an older version atm. It's net install correct, because I have a D-Link wireless card and was wondering if it supported the DWL-520+ chipset?

The way I see it, there's no "right" distro. Personally, I've used FC, and I liked that a bit. At the moment I use Slackware. It's a great distro. Don't be afraid to try that. Even Gentoo, if you follow the instructions, is not hard. In fact, once you have it installed it may be the best distro there is because portage is awesome. If you're afraid of the Gentoo installation, go with VidaLinux. From your list, though, my personal preference would be FC3.

I'm can't recommend gentoo to anyone anymore...the portage system is ok, but there are too many people who recommend it solely on the e-penis enlargement you'd alledgedly get from installing it. Everything takes too long to compile (even in 64-bit on my a64) and it's simply not worth the lack of convenience for a 3% boost in performance. Vidalinux will spare you the 3 hours it takes to install, but you'll still need to compile packages eventually. Not to mention the fact that being on the cutting edge of software means not only that you get the newest features, but you get the newest bugs. There's a reason why Debian and Ubuntu are still using the 2.4 kernel. The entire gentoo community is based on e-penis and a small boost in performance, nothing more.

I consider the apt system from Debian the best package management system. Ubuntu uses the same system, but the Ubuntu team actually updates the packages and fixes bugs. That's why Ubuntu gets my vote.

Meh. I must say, while I've never used it, I've heard great things about Ubuntu all around. I guess I'm a bit biased towards FC, though.

I have no plan of getting away from Slackware any time soon, and if I do it'll be for Gentoo again. I miss portage.
