I take pride in having an advanced grasp of the english language. I take offense at seeing people butcher it in situations that don't warrant sloppiness.

I can use a really advanced vocabulary but it takes too long and makes me look geeky.

This doesn't apply to every situation but a saying says:

The simplest explanation is the best explanation

Don't know where the quote comes from but it's true.. especially over the internet where typing gets boring when you have something so big to type and in a hurry at the same time.

Geeky? Claiming to be a reefer is 'geeky' in my eyes, not taking time to write something coherant.

Titusfied
2003-06-09, 09:04 PM
You shouldn't really have to "take time" to make a post that makes grammatical sense with the usage of big words. If you talk that way, you write that way. If you don't, well, you don't and trying to WILL make you look and sound stupid.

It usually doesn't take me more than 15 seconds to reply to something, unless it is some huge overblown reply about, oh, socks.

!King_Amazon!

I don't spend too much time on my posts, but I don't use big words that often either. Still, my posts are readable.

I agree w/ zaggon...I don't really care to take the time...I mean if you get it you get it and if you don't you don't ... so what if I didn't put a better word in for a lame one or a coma where it needs to go...

Actually iceman887 isn't talking about grammatical errors, sentence perfection or coherency here.

He was asking how people could be comfortable with using advanced vocabulary in their posts.

I don't mind seeing people using simple words all the time. (I being one of them :p) Things I couldn't stand are incoherent posts.

!King_Amazon!
2003-06-09, 11:56 PM
You really have a problem with your tenses senesia. You had this same problem on AIM. The correct way to write that sentence would be...

Things I can't stand are incoherent posts.

OR

Things I couldn't stand were incoherent posts.

It's incorrect because...

Things I couldn't(past) stand are(present) incoherent posts.

And no, I'm not wrong.

Senesia
2003-06-10, 12:02 AM
I'd have to use my excuse then. English isn't my first language, but I try and make my post coherent.

I did mention I'm not after sentence perfection.

I am too lazy to read that crap. Just go to webster.com and sign up for the Word Of The Day or something if you want.
Or study harder in school, also, read some Tom Clancy. His advanced writing styles should help your mind progress to a suitable nature.

Well, the word "could" doesn't have to describe "can" in the past.

It can be used to show one's uncertainty.

For example....It could be months before Blizzard release their 1.10 patch for Diablo2.

Not that I care, but I am trying to keep busy right now because I found something out about someone that I love that I gotta get my mind off of.
Anyway, so you were uncertain whether or not you could stand the posts labeled as "incoherent"?

Titusfied
2003-06-10, 06:44 PM
Haha, I doubt that is the problem, he probably has some degenerate form of an eye disease or something. I actually have no idea, but if glasses were the cure, he deserve to die a slow, painful death.

Anyway, yeah, Kapacity isn't a word, but it did fit for his purposes, and he did get the point across. I don't really think words like "Xillarama" are spelled that way either, but they get the point across and people understand it.

EDIT: BTW, Xillarama was a small amusement park where I live, but it is gone now.

Why do I get the distinct feeling that "the teach" isn't an actual teacher? Maybe it's because forum people are notorious for coming up with fictional identities :/
