Question TV Series Recommendations?
Reply
Posted 2011-05-13, 05:08 AM
Could've sworn we had a TV section... looks like someone got rid of it.

Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations of TV series to watch. I've moved into the serial space and I'm hungry for more. So far, from both sides of the pond, I've seen (and enjoyed):

[UK] Being Human
[US] Big Bang Theory
[US] Breaking Bad
[US] Dexter
[UK] Doctor Who
[US] Firefly
[US] Fringe
[US] Futurama
[US] Harper's Island
[US] House
[UK] League of Gentlemen
[UK] The Mighty Boosh
[UK] Misfits
[UK] Not Going Out
[UK] The Office
[UK] Outcasts
[CA] Pillars of the Earth
[UK] Psychoville
[UK] Spooks
[UK] Torchwood
[US] The Walking Dead

And I'm currently watching:

[US] Game of Thrones
[US] Heroes

---

What I'm looking for are series that consist not of standalone episodes (such as Big Bang Theory) but rather of episodes that fit in to a story arc - Harper's Island, The Walking Dead, Dexter, House (series 5), Fringe (ish), etc.

Out of my list, Breaking Bad and House are probably the exceptions - Breaking Bad especially so, as I'm not usually a fan of straight dramas.

I have a list of things others have mentioned to me:

[US] 24
[US] Battlestar Galactica (new)
[US] Chuck
[US] Legend of the Seeker
[UK] Life on Mars
[US] Lost
[US] Stargate (all)
[US] True Blood
[US] V (new)
[US] The X-Files

I'm a big fan of the SF shows (Fringe, which I finished a couple of days ago, has claimed a spot as one of my all-time favourite series), though I'm not against other genres or some comic relief.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the list of things I have to watch, or recommendations of other series?

Lost, Weeds (it's like Breaking Bad but pot instead of meth and a little less serious), Warehouse 13, The Wire, Legend of the Seeker (There are two seasons based on the first two books of the book series,) Spartacus

Highly recommended are bolded. Everything listed follows a story arc like you requested, so I suggest starting them from the beginning. I think that's all that I can suggest that you haven't already seen. I'll check my collection when I get home and make sure I didn't forget anything important.

Oooh! Totally forgot about The Wire.

I've read the Sword of Truth series, so I'm going to give LotS a look, and I'll check out the others.

Fair warning, the series does not follow the story of the books at all. There are very loose connections, but a lot of the material is unique to the series/books. I've read the book series as well.

Having read the books, the series was still really good IMO. The actor that plays Richard isn't the best, IMO, but the actors that play Kahlan and Zeddicus are both superb.

The original Iron Chef (from Japan) was at least a hundred times better than the shitty American version of the show.

Dexter. Once you get past the psychotic shit he does, it's a very good show. Humor is very unique as well (akin to that of the Office).

The Office. Both the American Version and English version are funny.

And even though Lost has been mentioned, I wish to forewarn you. It will probably be the longest tv series you ever watch. It's very very good, but it will waste hours of your day as you watch the next episode after numerous cliffhangers.
