It doesn't matter how hard you've dieted, how much lettuce you've eaten, your weight's up in Fiordland.

Scientists have found that gravity is stronger in the southwest of the South Island than almost anywhere else on Earth.

That means people weigh more there than elsewhere.

The difference is too small to be picked up by the bathroom scales.

But it is a sign that the area - known for its scenic wonders - is in for some heavy geological activity within the next few million years.

A study published in the American journal Science says Fiordland is one of the newest places in the world where Earth's plates are grinding together, creating a new zone of earthquakes and volcanoes similar to the Taupo volcanic zone.

This leaves heavy rocks from the planet's core relatively close to the surface, causing higher gravity.

The study says gravity between Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound in southwest Fiordland is 150 units above average.

"It's one of the strongest positive gravity anomalies on the planet, over land," said one of the study authors, Professor Peter Kamp of Waikato University.

That's wrong, if you're standing on Mt. Everest you weigh less than people at sea level.

In this case, the fault lines are causing the really dense rocks (with more gravity) to be nearer to the surface, thus making people right above those rocks weigh more.

Ao your saying the earth's Core isnt round, that there is a blurge closer to new zealand?

According to the article, yes. (But, the drawing's not to scale.) Even a small "blurge" in the core would have a detectable effect. And, the Earth's not a perfect sphere anyway, so the gravity isn't exacty equal everywhere else, either.

Well, it doesnt nesicarally pull it into the core where ever that is, it pulls it into the exact center. But I know what you mean

Let's just take the scientist people's word for it, since I don't think any of us are scientists.

The core's the most dense part of the Earth. It's the part with the most gravitational pull (which is why it's in the center in the first place.) It's like a magnet wrapped in cotton. The closer you are to it, the more effect it has on you.

Hmm yes I guess you are right, and since the core bulges out that would make the core gravity concentration closer to new Zealand. I get it now.

Heh, What teen would go on a diet..I cant think of a single one in my town of about 2000.

well......it was general advice, for later in life.....I sure dont need a diet....I could stand to gain some weight, really.......Im all bones (waits to see if anyone understands)
