And now for the conclusion to Blood Omen 2.
Re-materializing, Kain finds himself located in front of a massive metal door with a strange green rune built into the top. He uses his newfound telekinetic gifts to activate the rune, opening the barrier. Stepping inside, he works his way through a winding underground tunnel and enters into the primary power chamber of The Device. Situated in the middle of the room is a monstrous, horned, skull-faced creature simply named The Beast. Kain, anticipating a battle, draws his weapon, but is rebuked by the Beast. The creature tells the Vampire that the two are not enemies, and that he is glad to see Kain arrive.
The Beast explains to Kain that he is being held prisoner by the ones who are currently trying to revive the Device. He has been enslaved, and is being used as the primary power source to energize the weapon. He explains to Kain that there is no way for him to simply destroy the weapon, because it's size rivals that of Meridian itself. He informs Kain that his only hope is to locate the creature responsible for the design of the Device, a being known only as The Builder. Having been informed just how old the Device really is, Kain responds that there is no way a non-vampiric creature could have been responsible for creating the weapon and still be alive. The Beast tells Kain that is very much alive, and is has been held captive for millennia in a place named the Eternal Prison. The Prison, he tells Kain, is a monstrous stone penitentiary in which time has no effect. Seconds, hours and minutes stand frozen and the inmates recieve punishment for their heinous crimes infinitely. The Builder is still alive because he has been imprisoned there since the Device was built. He tells Kain that the Builder will gladly aid in the destruction of the weapon, and that the Vampire must seek him out immediately.
Kain sets out for the Eternal Prison, making his way into the futhest northern reaches of Nosgoth. He eventually reaches the Prison, and finds it to be a massive stone fortress built on a massive stone spire jutting hundreds upon hundreds of feet above the raging ocean. He infiltrates the stronghold, and is immediately attacked by the "wardens" of the Eternal Prison, a creed of plane-shifting beings robed in dark cloaks and wielding vicious scythes. As he makes his way through the Prison, he is consitently attacked by these creatures for threatening to disturb the balance of the environment. As he descends further and further into the Prison's levels, the surrounding environment becomes more and more detached from reality, the most psychosis-inducing levels consisting of maze-like hunks of concrete suspended over a whirling abyss.
Progressing further, Kain eventually encounters the most vicious beast that the Prison currently holds; a deformed, demonic humanoid with a massive fiery generator strapped to his back and metal plates surgically implanted into his skull and torso. Kain watches as the infinitely psychotic marauder tears through hallways full of inmates and even successfully slaughters a number of Wardens as well. The creature devours most of his kills, and upon realizing that he has no victims left, he turns his sights on Kain. Kain attempts to defend himself, but comes to realize that his enemy is nearly invulnerable, shrugging off every attack he utilizes. So, with no other option Kain flees, leading his predator into a large pool of water. The creature shrieks in agony as he plummets through the pool and Kain then understands that this opponent is obviously a Vampire. Breathing a sigh of relief, Kain leaves and makes his way furhter into the Prison.
Kain eventually locates the cell of the Builder and releases the man he has been looking for. Upon opening the door, he recieves a rude shock, for the creature held within is like nothing he has ever seen. Grey skin, a crown or horns upon his head, and very skeletal/demonic features. He makes note of this and deduces that the Builder and the Seer must obviously be of the same race. Explaining his dilemma, the Builder quickly complies, explaing to Kain what he must do in order to cripple the machine. He tells Kain of the Mass, the horrifying monstrosity that provides the Device with the Glyph energy and focusing power to make that energy into a weapon. He tells Kain that while the Beast powers the structure, the Mass gives firepower to the weapon. (It's like a car. The Beast powers the electrical system, the Mass provides the gasoline, powering the engine.) He tells Kain that in order to permanently cripple the Device, he must kill the Mass. In order to do that, he must take advantage of the one weakness that the Builder intentionally implemented into the structure: the Builder's own blood. If the Builder's blood is introduced into the Mass' system, it will poison the creature fatally, killing it within minutes. The Builder only asks for one thing in return for his services: death. He has spent millennia in the Eternal Prison and does not wish to languish here any longer. Willing to grant the Builder's final request, Kain bites into the demon's neck, sapping his blood and ending his life.
Making his way out of the Prison, Kain is suddenly confronted once again by the flesh-eating monster he thought he had killed previously. Kain continues his earlier tactics, leading the monster into traps two more times, and thinking both times that his competitor was finished. As he is minutes from exiting the Prison, however, the creature halts him one final time, preparing for their last encounter. He sits perched atop a large stone obelisk situated in the middle a of a deep fountain. Kain cannot go near him for fear of the water surrounding his opponent's perch. The creature unleashes his most devastating power, Immolate, a vampiric fire spell capable of instantly incinerating anything it consumes. Kain avoids his attacker's violent attacks and uses his new telekinetic powers to hurl the freak into the pool repeatedly. Eventually, the creature flees, and invigorated with the rush of conquest, Kain pursues The two combatants square off in the Prison's courtyard, underneath a massive statue of the Timestreamer Moebius. Eventually, Kain prevails, tricking the freak into collapsing the statue onto himself, wounding him fatally.
As he lies wounded on the stone floor, the monster finally gains some sort of lucidity, and in a completely rational and sane tone, addresses Kain by name, shocking the Vampire. He reveals his true identity as Magnus, Kain's former second-in-command. Kain responds in utter horror, for the demeted beast lying before him looks nothing like the Magnus he remembered. Revolted with this new information, Kain verbally assaults Magnus, blaming the younger Vampire for betraying him the night before the final battle against the Sarafan. Magnus, had left the camp that night and never returned. Kain had always assumed that he had left to join the ranks of their enemy, and that it had been Magnus' fault for his army's loss. Magnus truthfully and earnestly denies the notion, telling Kain that he had stayed loyal until the very end. That night, he had left kain's camp and infiltrated the Sarafan Stronghold with the intention of assassinating the Sarafan Lord pre-emptively. He wanted to cripple the enemy before the battle even began. Fate, however, would choose another course of action, and Magnus was captured by his enemies. Not killed, but tortured and mutilated over the course of 200 years. He was placed inside of the Eternal Prison a century ago, and 100 years of constant tormet drove him to complete insanity, simultaneously augmenting his vampiric powers, making him nearly invinicible.
Shocked and touched by these words, Kain genuinely thanks his former apprentice. Magnus swears allegiance to Kain now, as he has always sworn his allegiance, but apologizes, for in his current condition, he cannot fight alongside his former master. He has suffered too many grievous wounds and his body won't last much longer. In addition, his body has now become such a vile parody of his proud vampiric form that he cannot imagine continuing to live so shamefully for even so much as another day. He asks for Kain's mercy, to kill him and end his suffering now. Kain, greatful to his loyal servant, obliges, drinking his blood and absorbing the powerful Immolate technique. Fueled by rage after seeing what the Sarafan have done to his most beloved underling, Kain leaves the Eternal Prison determined to end the Sarafan Lord's life in the most brutal ways imaginable.
Returning to the Device, the Beast congratulates Kain on obtaining the blood of the Builder, and opens the path into the lower levels of the Device. Before Kain departs, however, the Beast explains exactly who the true enemy is. The Sarafan have been constructing Glyph generators all over Meridian. Through these generators, Glyph Barriers are created and the city is powered. But these generators serve a further purpose that the Sarafan are not aware of. They have been built for the purpose of distributing as much Glyph energy as they can, for the purpose of blanketing the entire world in the Glyph magic thereby ending the Vampire bloodline permanently. This plan, however, is beyond the understanding of the Sarafan Order. The Sarafan are merely puppets, doing the small menial tasks for their unknown masters: The Hylden. The Beast explains to Kain that the Hylden are responsible for the revival of the Device and the re-institution of the Sarafan Order, and their leader is none other than the Sarafan Lord, who in reality is the Hylden Lord.
Ingrained with this new information, Kain exits the Beast's chamber and makes his way into the monstrous bowels of the Device. Skulking through the metallic caverns, Kain spies a lone Glyph Wright enter a large power room. He watches as the Glyph Wright suddenly shudders, his form becoming translucent and morphing into something else entirely. When the transformation is complete, stading in the center of the room is a grey-skinned, horned demon, just like the Builder (only much younger, healthier and vicious-looking) and the Seer (only male). Kain now knows that his enemies are the Hylden, and this is their face.
Sneaking throughout the Device, Kain kills an innumerable amount of the Hylden enemy, eventually bringing him to the chamber of the Mass. Kain looks upon the groutesque beast and marvels at it's size. It is easily 30 times larger than Kain itself, a massive brain-like lump of tissue and meat. Riding the chamber's elevator system, Kain ascends to the platform just above the "mouth" of the creature. Using his razor-sharp claws, kain slices into his own wrist and squeezes his blood (containing the Builder's blood) into the feeding-hole of the Mass. After a few moments, the entire chamber shudders with the lethal physiological responses of the Mass reacting to the toxins in his system. Alarms sound, the ceiling shudders and begins to drop debris into the chamber and Hylden personnel scramble everywhere. Kain strides out of the Device confidently as the Mass dies and chaos erupts around him.
Arriving in the Beast's chamber, Kain immediately notices that his ally is no longer there. Instead, stading in the Beast's containment field, is a blue-skinned, winged creature. Kain realizes imediately who it is, but cannot comprehaned how he is alive. The creature introduces himself as Janos Audron and thanks Kain for his assistance. He explains to Kain that he has been chained to the Device for hundreds of years, his life constantly drained away to feed the machine. Centuries of torment ravaged his form, transforming him into the foul Beast that Kain had met before. Since Kain's defeat of the Mass, the Device has stopped functioning properly and has ceased draining his life. Janos' unparalleled regenerative powers restored his natural form before Kain even had the chance to return.
he then goes on to tell Kain of the true history of the Hylden. He explains the great war between the Vampires and the Hylden, how the grey-skinned adversaries were banished to the Demon Dimension and how the Vampires were inflicted with their terrible curse. Kain, confused as to how they have re-entered Nosgoth, asks Janos how they broke through the barrier between dimensions. Janos explains that when Kain refused the sacrifice at the Pillars, their destruction caused a rift in the fabric of reality. Once powerful enough for one mighty Hylden to force his way through. That Hylden was the Hylden Lord, and since his re-entry into Nosgoth, he has opened a massive dimensional rift called the Hylden Gate, through which a steady but small number of Hylden adversaries can break through. Janos explains that because the banishment is still in effect, however weak it may be, the Hylden cannot survive in Nosgoth without that Gate. The Gate is their umbilical cord back to the Demon Dimension. If Kain destroys the Hylden Gate, he kills every Hylden in Nosgoth. Before their conversation can continue, however, the rooms shudders violently. Janos uses his powers to transport both of them to Sanctuary, where their palaver can proceed.
Arriving in Sanctuary, Janos is greeted by an elated Vorador, shock-stricken that his former master has returned from the grave. Janos, knowing that there is little time to dawdle, explains the situation to the Cabal, telling them of the Hylden City, a massive structure across the sea that houses the Hylden Gate. Janos' original plan was to simply gather all available Vampire forces and launch a final assault against the City, but he has recently come to realize that the City is surrounded by an impregnible magical shield, and if any assault is to be made, the shield must be deactivated. Umah chimes in, stating that recently a lot of activity has taken place on Meridian's wharves. Lots of slaves being taken somewhere across the sea. Janos concludes that the ships must be periodically traveling to the Hylden City, and that an agent must be sent aboard those ships in order to deactivate the shield. Kain volunteers, and Umah asks to be sent with him. Rejecting her offer of assistance, Kain claims that he can accomplish his task alone, and that he doesn't need a guard at his back. Janos advises Kain to take help when offered, and eventually the Vampire relents. Kain and Umah set out for the wharves, and then for the Hylden City.
Making their way to the docks, Umah informs Kain to be wary of their adversaries, to which Kain replies that he has recently defeated far worse than anything the Sarafan can throw at him. Umah stops him, asking what he plans to do when the Sarafan Lord is dead and the world is free of their oppression. Kain responds that she already knows the answer to that: Nosgoth will be his to rule. Upon hearing this, Umah quickly snatches the Nexus Stone from Kain's breastplate and tells him that his service is no longer needed. She tells Kain that if Nosgoth falls under his rule, he wouldn't hesitate to kill every last member of the Cabal, simply so he'd be able to reshape the Vampire race however he wishes, with no one to oppose him. Kain, furious, tells her that if she dares to stand in his way now, that he will kill her without hesitation and pry the Nexus Stone from her thieving fingers. With a sense of victory, Umah teleports from Kain's reach and escapes him, forcing him to navigate the wharves on his own.
Eventually, after tearing through a legion of the Sarafan's soldiers, Kain encounters Umah once again, surrounded by Sarafan Glyph Knights and badly wounded. She executes one with her bare hands, and just as another one is about to end her life, Kain moves in, killing the rest with ease. Kain kneels down to Umah, sympathetic, cradling her in his arms. She tells him that she gravely overestimated her own abilities and that she is on the verge of death. She tells him that if he helps her, gives her some of his blood, she can be good as new in minutes. Kain gently asks Umah if she understands now that Nosgoth is his to rule, and she agrees completely. He asks her if she understands that it is his destiny to rule Nosgoth, and she says with complete devotion that she does understand. With that, Kain slits her throat, killing her. He laments her death, asking why she had to betray him. He muses that she could have been his queen, but now, she has left him alone. Leaving her body on the docks, Kain boards one of the City-bound ships and prepares for the final chapter in his journey.
Docking at the Hylden City, Kain surveys his new surroundings and marvels at the massive size of the structure. Suddenly, the Hylden lord appears before him, now unmasked, revealing his true Hylden face. He tells Kain that in spite of his progress, Nosgoth will fall before the might of the Hylden army. Within hours a military force unlike any that Nosgoth has ever seen will pour through the Gate and overwhelm the populace. The humans will be enslaved and the Vampires will be eradicated. With that, the Lord says farewell to Kain as he prepares to finish the Vampire with the Reaver. However, the blade is repelled and the Lord stares in horror as he realizes that Kain wears the Nexus Stone. The Hylden Lord teleports away, telling Kain that one way or another, Nosgoth will fall before him, and there is nothing Kain can do to stop it.
Making his way inside the City, he encounters numerous Hylden adversaries as well as a nearly indestructible Greater Demon, the humanoid, superior brother of the spider-like Lesser Demons he had encountered in the Wasteland. He investigates in awe the extreme advancement of the Hylden's technology, put to use throughout the entire City. Eventually, he finds his way to the shield generator, destroys it and contacts Janos to bring the reinforcements. Janos and Vorador arrive shortly thereafter, Vorador asking as to the whereabouts of Umah. Kain bluntly informs Vorador of his execution of the traitor, and Vorador is enraged. Cursing Kain's name, he vocally damns himself for resurrecting Kain, claiming that Kain's actions will damn them all eventually. Janos tries to break the fight up when suddenly the Hylden Lord appears, striking down Vorador with a bolt from the Reaver and quickly escaping. Janos stays to tend to Vorador's wounds but tells Kain that in order to destroy the Hylden Gate, he must throw the Nexus Stone into it. The surge of power will cause the Gate to collapse inward on itself, killing the Hylden and ending their threat. Janos then uses his powers to teleport Kain to the Gate.
Kain re-materializes on a series of steel catwalks suspended over the massive, whirling vortex of the Hylden Gate. He is not alone however, as the Hylden Lord is there as well. The Hylden Lord congratulates Kain for making as much progress as he has and readily admits that he had severely underestimated the Vampire's abilities. He then asks Kain if he's ever stopped to consider why his compatriots repeatedly betray him only to side with the Hylden Lord. He tells Kain that it is not the Vampire's abmitions of world conquest that are the right and noble ambitions, but his own. He tells Kain that his people are the deserving rulers of Nosgoth, not the Vampires and that even if he falls there will be more to take his place. With that, the fight begins, the two matching each other blow for blow, neither one gaining any leverage over the other. They stop momentarily and the Hylden Lord tells Kain that they are at a stalemate. In order to stop the Hylden Lord, Kain must sacrifice the Nexus Stone to the Gate. But, by doing so, he opens himself up to the Reaver and risks his own demise. He tells Kain that he is trapped, and that unless he foolishly tosses away the Stone, the Hylden will eventually pour through the Gate and Kain will have lost. Realizing that he has no other choice, Kain brazenly reomves the Nexus Stone from his chestplate and drops it into the void below. The Hylden Lord, shocked with this turn of events, approaches for the kill as the Hylden Gate below them surges, lashing lightning and fire in all directions. The Hylden Lord knocks Kain violently to the ground, stunning him vitally, leaving him open to attack.
Suddenly, as the defenseless Kain is about to be struck down by the Reaver, Janos Audron flies into the Lord, knocking the Reaver from his grasp. Pummeling the Hylden adversary, Janos curses his opponent and his evil plans. The hylden Lord retorts that it is the Vampire race that has been acting in the stead of evil, unfairly banishing their race to the Demon Dimension. The two argue back and forth, and as their debate hits its climax, the two clash, brutalizing one another as the Gate collapses below them. Eventually, the Hylden Lord prevails, grasping Janos by the throat and sentencing him to an eternity of his own making. He curses Janos and commands him to witness what the Demon Dimension can inflict upon an angelic being. With that, the Hylden Lord hurls Janos into the Gate, condemning him to an eternity of torment.
It is then that Kain rises to his feet, groggy, but still very mush alive. He regains composure and realizes that clutched in his hand is the Soul Reaver. The two begin the final phase of their duel atop the central platform of the catwalk. Kain brandishing the Reaver and the Hylden Lord using his bare hands. Finally, after a grueling battle, Kain lifts his opponent into the air by his throat and impales him upon the Reaver blade. He drops his enemy to the ground who lies, clutching his fatal wound. He tells kain that even in his death, there will be more of his brood to stand in his place. The war is not over. Kain responds that if what the Hylden Lord says is true, he will be eagerly awaiting their arrival. With that he finishes the Hylden Lord in a flash of pulsing green light.
Kain escapes the tower, and as he is striding away from the rupturing structure, he muses about his victory and his plans for the near future. The Sarafan, now leaderless, must be thoroughly eliminated, the Glyph networks must be eradicated and the entire framework of Nosgoth must be rebuilt according to Kain's will. He relishes in his victory and leaves the carnage behind him.
With that, the new memories blooming in Kain's mind come to rest, replacing the past he had known before. Raziel's body dissipates on the floor of the Sarafan Memorial Chamber and Kain stands alone, clutching the Soul Reaver (well, actually, without Raziel's soul stored inside of it, it's referred to as the Blood Reaver). Terrified at what the future may hold, he exits the chamber and this chapter in our story ends.
And there you have it. The comprehensive plot to every Legacy of Kain game except Defiance. For the time being, I'm not going to do Defiance unless somebody honestly wants me to. If you've got any questions regarding the plot, ask away. I've got most of the answers. Thanks for reading.
