It's the hash symbol... should be on your keyboard.

Don't know about American keyboards, but on English ones it's between the Enter and @ key... but on American keyboards, @ is over the 2, right?

EDIT: Just found an American keyboard layout on Google - # is above the 3 button -- Shift + 3

Pretty sure he was just being a douchebag.
