Final PSP Retail System Specs
A few changes, a few choice bits of new detail.

September 29, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment's official website for the PlayStation Portable updated over the week of the Tokyo Game Show with the final details on the hardware specifications of the retail version of the PSP and UMD format. While some minor details may still be subject to change, the system is just about locked down for production at this point. Also to note, these are not the technical specifications, meaning that polygon count and other techie terms are not in the detail sheet -- this is more an overall look at the system and its capabilities, for retailers and publishers to know the dimensions and other relevant details of the unit itself.
Those relevant details include a few new pieces of information. The new list, which is in most ways identical to the list handed out at E3 and detailed in IGN's PSP FAQ, lists the pack-in features for the Japanese version of the PSP. The bundled accessories will include the AC adapter, the battery pack (which is removable with some minor installation work, but will probably just be included pre-installed), a pair of headphones (with a remote control dongle on the cord, assumedly for volume adjustment since more complex and feature-packed LCD-based remote dongles like that on an iPod can be expensive), and a carrying pouch.

The specs also reconfirm the ability to play MP3 audio in addition to ATRAC3plus audio -- although this doesn't specifically say that the handheld will be able to read any MP3 file off the memory stick, it's a fairly clear indication (Audio UMDs will use ATRAC3+.) Region and parental encoding is mentioned as an access control of the UMD software specification, but it is unknown if this will be used for all formats of UMD (the movie industry may force it, but SCE has indicated in the past that it plans to keep the games region-free.) Standard battery life, which has never been a part of the retail or developer specs, are again left off the list -- Sony has addressed battery life publicly at E3, stating a maximum of 10 hours and a minimum of 2 hours of runtime, but has not yet released a benchmark of the average expected battery life.

Below are the latest PSP specs, accurate as of September 24, 2004. We'll have more info (including details on the bundled US accessories, if that changes when the system launches here later next year) as things develop.
