Sobots - Robots with emotions
Reply
Posted 2005-02-14, 03:45 AM
I read recently in a newspaper about 'Sobots' - Robots with emotions. I hadn't heard it anywhere else, so I just forgot about it.

Until today. The article is not yet online, so I suppose I'll have to type it up...

----------

Get ready for the rise of the romantic robots

The arrival of intelligent robots that can read, learn and even breed is a step closer. Kim Jong-hwan, a professor at South Korea's Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, unveiled software which he said creates 14 artificial chromosomes.

In a development that redefines the term "cyber sex", the software will give machines the ability to feel, reason and desire according to Mr, Kim. The code is modelled on human DNA, although as a single rather than the complex double helix of a real chromosome.

Because these robots would be software-based, the researchers refer to them as 'sobots'. In tests carried out by researchers, the chromosomes caused different reactions to external stimuli in the software.

Mr. Kim said this could lead to the robots breeding and thus evolving. He said robots would also have personalities.

Mr. Kim is the creator of the robot world cup, which has becoma a popular forum for robotics researchers to measure their progress against competitors from around the world. He said that because of the possible evolution of sobots, he believed it better to provide them with good, soft chromosomes, so they don't develop into a threat to humanity.

The software will be installed on a robot within three months.

Article taken from Computer Active (issue 183). It should be online (www.computeractive.co.uk) after the 17th of Feb.

Good soft chromosomes my ass. Soon enough, "evil" software packs will be circling around on the black market and everyone will be able to get their own HK-47.

The problem with them though, is that because it is software, and they Sobots have the...knowledge to do so, they can send out this software to anywhere they please...

Which effectively means they can infect our computers and make them fretful and insecure machines that are always depressed, or maybe mischievous little bastards that will keep on shutting themselves down for a joke...etc etc...

Ya I suppose, but it's just a bad idea in general. Humans are on the top of the food chain for a reason, we don't need anyting comprimising our authority. We have a hard enough time deal w/ our own kind. Damn Koreans!

Interesting. Stupid but interesting. What is the use of feelings if you cannot think for yourself and act on them? Its a bunch of bullshit. And it shouldn't be done either.

But our little robot friends will be able to act on their new feelings...give Mr. Kim enough time, and he (probably along with other scientists) will create robots with this technology that will have their own peronsalities, and will be able to act without needing to be programmed or controlled by a human.

Just think, all these robots you see in films won't be animated...but real robot actors...

He he he...Which is why Mr. Kim and his scientists want to put in "soft good chromosomes". Gving them the ability to fomr different personalities...which should be good...but if they are left where bad things happen, then they should develop bad personalities...in no time at all, we will have mini Schwarzenegers walking around...

In scientific terms, it could be classed as a good idea, because then we can study how different emotions and personalities are 'formed'...to some extent...

But in the terms of the rest of the world...it's an incredibly bad idea...if they turn against us...heaven forbid...doesn't bear thinking about...just think how many computers there are in the world...not just PC's, Laptops, Apples...but all the other things in life...
