Buying/registering a domain name

Anyone know which site I could go to buy/register a domain name? I don't really know much about this process, so howto links with such information would also be nice.

http://www.godaddy.com

Pretty popular site for it. I have no personal experience with it though.

Godaddy offers terribly slow domain forwarding. If you have your own nameservers, they are perfectly fine (and inexpensive). If, however, you're planning to use it to redirect visitors to another address, e.g. http://chruser.deviantart.com, I would go for another, more expensive service like http://www.oriweb.com.

I've used oriweb.com for years without issue.
