Fleischer, Letterman Discuss 'Nuclear' Vs. 'Nucular'

POSTED: 8:48 a.m. EDT July 18, 2003

NEW YORK -- Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer says he considered saying something to President George W. Bush about his pronunciation of the word "nuclear" -- but never did.

Fleisher appeared on CBS's "The Late Show with David Letterman" Thursday. Letterman brought up Bush's much-noted pronunciation of "nuclear" as NU-cu-lar -- rather than NU-cle-ar -- when talking about weapons of mass destruction.

Fleischer quipped: "That might be why we haven't found them yet."

Letterman asked if anybody has ever said to the president, "Oh, by the way, it's not 'nucular."'

Fleischer said he's thought about going into the Oval Office and doing just that -- but he hasn't done it.

Fleischer's last day as Bush's press secretary was Monday. He plans to speak publicly and he is considering writing a book on his White House experiences.

Fleischer told Letterman that being press secretary was "a job that takes its toll." He says he just wants to read the sports section first again."
