Anways I am getting a new desktop, but have a lot of files I want to keep from my laptop which is going to my brother. I was thinking just grab a usb cable and link them and allow for file sharing, anyone have another idea?
oh... Well, I suppose you could just buy a couple of dvds and burn onto them. Other than that, you could just hook up your old hardrive to your new pc.
Kind of on the same note, if I put a new HDD(40gb) in my PC and copy all my data to it(pretty much a backup HDD) and reinstall WinXP(120GB HDD), would I be able to access all the data on the 40gb HDD I added when everything is all said and done?
I'm almost positive it will work, but I just want to make sure, so that I don't end up losing 40gb of data.

No reason why it shouldn't work. As long as it acts as the Slave HDD, and you don't accidentally format it or anything. Even better, have it out of the computer when you re-install Windows.
As you won't have the OS on it, it'll just be a storage device. So it should work perfectly.
