Health Care/Medical Question

I recently went to a doctor for health reasons, and he referred me to see another doctor at the same office. When I made an appointment with the other doctor, I was never informed that the new doctor was not covered under my insurance. Now, I've got an unexpected large bill from the doctor's office.

Is there any sort of law saying that they have to inform me of that sort of thing? I really don't want to be stuck with this huge bill. I assumed that since the doctor was in the same office, recommended by my doctor, and nobody ever told me he wasn't, he would be covered under my insurance. Obviously, had I known he wouldn't be covered, I would have seen someone else.

Damn man that sucks. I wish I could help you out but I think you're stuck on this one. :-/


Usually they say "Ignorance to the law is no excuse." Atleast with some of the laws I've broken.

Unfortunately I think you may be stuck on this one, the only potential remedy I could see would be to give the insurance company a call and see if you can work something out with them. As I'm sure you've gathered though, the first question when you get a referral in the future should be "Do they accept my insurance?"

I spent two hours in the ER in March because I couldn't swallow anything without wanting to tear out my throat, and I a fever of 105. It was 11pm on a Sunday night, and I didn't feel like I could wait until the next day to set up an appointment. Needless to say I got tagged with bills totalling $600. $400 of which still isn't paid off...

Hospitals suck...

Oh, and it turned out I had strep. Again. Doctor suggested I get my tonsils removed. To hell with that.

Incompetence of the staff not to notify you of special charge. I would expect my doctor to explain the circumstances of the referral. I'm guessing he was a specialist of some sort? General practitioners are usually covered under general health insurance.

Figures. I work at a Medical Office and from what I know, you shouldn't have to pay if they didn't notify you of such charges. Psychologists charge because they aren't MDs and therefore aren't covered under insurance. It's a hassle. You can file a complaint to the whatever the Medical society is in your area - where I live, it's the College of Physicians - to avoid paying the fee.

I think Meijer actually has a company Psychologist...For trauma and such...
