Post Conflict Desert Storm

The general premise is, at least, a unique one. Conflict: Desert Storm takes the player from the initiation of the war to a fictional conclusion that I won't give away, but that will surely be satisfying to gamers who fondly remember Wolfenstein 3D. This is territory that hasn't really been covered before, and those who followed the war on TV will surely relish the opportunity to take on the elite troops of the Iraqi army who, in this version of reality, will not willingly surrender at the drop of a hat. Over the course of several "boot camp" training session and 15 individual missions, players will coordinate a squad of four in the execution of a variety of objectives, ranging from the elimination of SCUD missile sites to the rescuing of prisoners and hostages.

It should be stated that, while Conflict: Desert Storm looks quite a lot like many other third-person action-adventure games on the market these days, it's anything but. The differences aren't in the graphics - which, in truth, are as detailed and colorful as next-generation technology and the desert setting will allow - but in the gameplay, which occupies a territory squarely between shoot-em-up action and realism. Your view of the action is an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, and the control scheme will be pretty familiar to those who've played games like Halo. But this is a real-world setting, so there'll be no crazy acrobatics or absorption of 100 bullets here. At the same time, the authenticity doesn't overwhelm the fun factor. In reality, one shot would generally be enough to disable or kill a foot soldier. In Conflict: Desert Storm, the limit rises to somewhere around three consecutive hits, meaning that one stray bullet usually won't be enough to take you out, but that you also can't go traipsing into rooms full of enemies without any sort of a tactically sound plan, either.

Conflict: Desert Storm could reach the elusive brass ring of pleasing just about everybody when it releases for PC, Xbox and PS2.
