Composite and component cables?
Reply

I'm considering to purchase an XBOX 360 Premium HDMI (20 GB) (from here.) It comes with a component cable. My TV only supports SCART and S-Video, and my computer's TV card supports composite. My question is, is it possible to use the XBOX 360's default component cable as a composite cable, or are they completely different standards?

Wikipedia states the following in their Component video article:

Modern game systems (such as the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii) use the same connector pins for both YPbPr and composite video, with a software or hardware switch to determine which signal is generated. Hence, a common complaint, especially with the PlayStation 2[citation needed], is that the component video signals are very green, with very dark reds and blues. This is simply because the system menu has not been changed from AV (composite) to RGB (component).

Most likely you will need to buy a different cable.

If i understand your question and the concept of cables this should answer your questions.

Assuming composite is Red Yellow White, and Component is Red Blue Green. They come on the same cable. And like i said earlier there is an HDTV switch on the end of the cable to switch depending on which one you use.

Ah, very nice! I figured the "switch" would either be a button on the console itself, or a software setting. A component cable generally contains RGB connectors, while composite cables contain yellow, white and red connectors. The above example shouldn't be called a component cable, although it'll effectively function as one. Thanks!
