Well well well, that is a tough one, a draw between Hendrix and Van Halen.

Though I really hate their music, the guitarists of Dragonforce have such an amazing ability to play the guitar.

If you haven't heard them, check out their myspace or something or I'll link you.

Heh, I've beg to differ based off of live video's ive seen plus what plenty of people on another forum ahve said when they've seen them live.

what im getting at is they play extremely sloppy live adn can't keep up with there own songs for the most part. This si what ive heard and seen from some vids.

Van Halen and Hendrix are just so superior in so many wyas, they can make the guitars do things and sounds that the dragonforce guitariest cant even dream about. Not to be mean or anything, but they are no wheres in the same league as the two guys I mentioned.

*I also assume you are being sarcastic*

Clapton is God.

No disrespect to Van Halen, Morello, Page, Hendrix, or anyone else anyone might mention.
Hendrix would probably have been my choice had he'd lived to expand upon his body of work.

My favorite guitarist, however, is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.

When I think of best guitarist I usually think of popularity, skill, charisma (not so much but it helps), etc. Would people buy albums or attend shows knowing this guitarist is playing? Are they legendary? Do most people know who they are? I also somewhat take that into consideration. Also it's not all about the ability to play fast but if the songs sound good, too. Like, if you can play really really fast & the song theoretically makes sense, that is a plus, imo.

Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, George Harrison, David Gilmour, Les Paul, Van Halen all come to mind when I think of best guitarist(s), all things considered.

I agree, Tom Morello is amazing. Hello, even Shavo and Darian from SOAD are excellent players, I love almost every riff in every system of a down song. But I feel Hendrix is my pick.

Look at when he was popular, and his cirumstances and the amazing things that he could do. Hendrix for sure.

Jimi Hendrix. Not only are his songs still amazing but he was way ahead of his time. He changed the way people played guitar forever. If only he had the chance to play longer
