"DragonBall, created by Akira Toriyama, was originally serialized in a weekly manga magazine called Shonen Jump. Toriyama's story and characters parallel the beloved Chinese saga "Journey to the West" (also known as "The Monkey King"). For generations, tales (no pun intended) of the Monkey King were passed down and enjoyed in both China and Japan (known as the "Saiyuki"). DragonBall later developed into a successful television series, starting Feb. 26, 1986, that ran for over three years, producing 153 episodes. On April 26, 1989, "DragonBall Z" continues the saga, with 291 episodes, not to mention 17 original movies and annual television specials. "DragonBall GT" is the final television series, that began Feb. 21, 1996. DragonBall has become one of the most popular and most widely known manga and anime series in Japan, and now a global phenomenon. One can find foreign editions of DragonBall manga, as well CDs, video games, toys, original movies and television episodes throughout Asia, Europe, South America and the United States."
So DB came out in 1989. Dragonball Z was in 1996, where it was directly translated to English for the USA. So 1996. People started to get interested in the whole japanese animation, so they started to draw it, then pokemon came out, and it exploded, I believe in 1998.
