They cancelled it for GameCube.. they just anounced it a few hours ago in a press release in Seattle. Microsoft bought the rights to it and it will be Xbox exclusive now.
Considering it was developed by Retro Studios, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo, the idea of Microsoft buying the rights to the game is impossible.
Rare was not a subsidiary of Nintendo. Nintendo had a contract with them, not ownership. All of Rare's creations (aside from Donkey Kong and all characters contained therein, and Star Fox) were owned by Rare, and it is their right to do with them as they choose. The entire Metroid series and Retro Studios are owned by Nintendo. If the game was purchased by Microsoft, it would be at Nintendo's discretion.
Blah! Nothing is impossible now-a-days. Microsoft making video game systems. Sega making games for every damn system!? Square leaving Nintendo!? Crash Bandicoot on X Box!? Sonic on Gamecube!? Rare leaves Nintendo for Microsoft!? Dood, anything can happen at this point. Yeah that would definitely be unlikely, but Metriod Prime is the only reason I'd buy a GameCube. I love Metriod! *Goes to play Super Metriod*
Raiden, you forgot to mention Square making games for Nintendo again, Eidos making games for Nintendo (including the Legacy of Kain series) and Nintendo gaining exclusive rights to the Resident Evil series.
It's going to rule. Most of my friends are really against it because it's from a 1st person perspective, but I think it's far more interesting than if they just made it 3rd person, or (heaven forbid) a side-scroller.
Side scrollers were awesome back in the day. Hell, all of the old side-scrollers are still awesome. NEW ones, on the other hand, just suck. Anyone ever play Mischief Makers? AWFUL. I'm glad Metroid Prime is 1st person. It looks incredible.
