Strange Frost

Yesterday, came home from school, and there was this mist creeping in down from the moors. There was also this really starnge frost. It only seemed to affect really tall grass, fences, small trees, and nothing else really. We also had some icicles on the boiler venty thingy. Really hot metal wih icicles.

But anyway, got home, the temperature was about 1C. Got the camera and took some pictures. 5 minutes later, came inside. The temperature was -1C.

By the time I'd put all the photos on the computer (about 10 minutes later), you couldn't see anything outside - the mist had come in really fast and thick. You could only see someone outside if they put their face to the glass - and it was really cold, about -4C.

Here are the pics, they are really weird:

It's a photogenic tree...it had a giant crow in it, but that flew off just as I was taking the shot)

Some trees over the hill, about 100 metres away. Look how hard to see they are.

Silver birch and itsy bitsy flower pot man. See the frost on the birch?

A few of the garden.

The house.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...2/DSCF0021.jpg

See that big white wall? That's the mist.

----------

Amazing views in Summer, horrible weather in Winter.

Sorry about the quality of the photos. At the time it was really dark (thought I'd leave them dark for a better sense of what it was like), and either something was condensing on the camera lens, or I breathed out when I took the pics.

Spooky, huh? Especially the tree:

I would put the full size things up, but each is a mb and Photobucket, nor this attachment system goes up to 1mb.

Its called hoarfrost (I dont know why), but we get it all the time around here in Canada, when it is really warm, and the mist in the air freezes to everything. Think of it as airborne dew. I love it when it happens, it makes good photo opportunities, like this one

Hoarfrost A deposit of interlocking ice crystals (hoar crystals) formed by direct sublimation on objects, usually those of small diameter freely exposed to the air, such as tree branches, plant stems and leaf edges, wires, poles, etc., which surface is sufficiently cooled, mostly by nocturnal radiation, to cause the direct sublimation of the water vapor contained in the ambient air.

Sure, go ahead.

Hoarfrost...what a strange name. A strange thing to happen too.

Sorry James, but your pic ain't showing up.

Talking about the pictures, if people want to see them bigger then try: lenlen.tollfreepage.com/frost.htm Hopefully they are all there fullsized. If not, I'm gonna destroy Dreamweaver.

EDIT: FileZilla will die! It won't upload the photos.

Wow.

I'd love to live in Canada, just for the snow. It must be so wonderful to wake up one morning, open your curtains, look out of the window and see a layer of smooth, white snow as far as the eye can see.

It's been years since I last saw proper snow.

I like it, except that shovelling the driveway can get kind of tiring after a while...

But it can be fun.

A clear drive with giant banks on either side. A little snowman round the back of the house. Neighbours pelting snowballs at each other.

Looking at the photos of your little town, I'd imagine it can be quite fun when there's a lot of snow around.
