I drove a standard today.

What a fucking disaster. Today I decided that it was a good day to learn how to drive a standard. It started out ok, my mom took me to a local cemetary to learn. I had some trouble smoothly letting off the clutch and applying pressure on the gas pedal at first, but I sort of got the hang of it. While driving in the cemetary, I never got out of 2nd gear. This is mostly because its a cemetary and you don't really have a need to go fast.

Well, as I was pulling out of the cemetary onto the road everything was going smoothly. Until it is time to shift to the 3rd gear, instead of shifting to 3rd, I accidently went to the 5th gear. Now I have no fucking idea what is happening, the engine seems to be going crazy, I am hearing clunking noises, and my mom is yelling at me to get into 3rd gear. In the confusion trying to get into 3rd gear, I manage to shift down as i look in my mirror to find that 3 cars are behind me. When I shift down I press down on the gas to speed up for the cars behind me, the engine starts to make this crazy wirring noise and I slow down alot, I notice my RPM needle is all the way to the right. Then I decide that this is because I am in first gear, I then finnaly get it into 3rd gear and go along my merry way. This was all when I was going up a hill BTW.

What a nightmare. I hope it only gets easier to drive one of those damn standard machines.

It's not that hard. Of course I haven't taken it on the freeway or anything, but sometimes my parents will let me drive with them when it's near by, and it's fairly easy once you get used to it.

I may have to learn to drive standard, after I get my liscence. This is because of are Ford Bronco II which has a plow on it in winter to plow are driveway. And once I have my liscence I will be the nominie for plowing. BS.

But I wouldn't mind it.

Standards kind of have a steep learning curve. After enough practice though, you shift without thinking.

I dunno about your state, but in my state if you are caught driving without a license you can't get a license until you are 21.

oh sometimes drove in my dads car around the neighbourhood (never any cops around), and yeah handling the clutch in the beginning can be a pain, especially when there are other cars involved. Just remember to keep it cool and things will go much more smoothly :P

Been driving a Standard for 5+ years now, and I prefer them.

One thing you DEFINITELY want to make certain, is that you keep learning on the same vehicle. I learned on 2 different standards, and the problem is the clutch operates differently on different cars.

Once you get some proficiency, you'll be able to switch around cars and not malf up too badly.
