The game's very open-ended, so there really isn't anything you need to do. There's a main quest, but, as is everything else in the game, it's optional. If you want to progress that way, however, your best bet is to talk to lots of people, read what they say, and try to do some of it.

If you still need a push, however, talk to WW. He's our local Morrowind god.

Okay, so you start in Seyda Neen. Now the first thing is that as soon as you make your charactor and get your papers, go through the door, then go all the way down the ramp and check all the sacks and other containers and take everything you find, plus the barrels under the kegs. Then, you go back up to the room you passed on the way down and loot it, too. Don't forget to clean out the lockbox (after you pick up the lockpick on the table, go to your inventory, click the lockpick, then click yourself. Hit the ready weapon button, then attack the box with the lockpick), and the baskets. On your way out of the compound, you will be forced to find a ring; after you leave, you will encounter a blonde haired, fair skinned elf who is looking for it. Give him his ring, to recieve a very helpfull boost in the local merchant's attitude toward you. Proceed to said merchant (there should be a tall building with stairs up to a deck) and sell all your loot and buy armor and weapons appropriate to your job class. Be sure to keep "Package for Cassius Cosaides".

Now, there are two sources of easy money near by that are just too good to pass up. Cross the bridge from the tradehouse, then proceed to the edge of town. Follow the path to the left untill you come upon a book laying in the road. A man falls, carrying some valuable scrolls; take it all. Then, return to the town, except instead of crossing the bridge, follow the coastline east untill you come upon a dead man with 200 gold. Go back to the guy who you had to tell your character class to when you started and talk about the murder, giving him the money you found, to get an easy quest for 500 gold. The guy you're looking to kill lives in an unlocked hut between the tradehouse and the lighthouse; when you talk to him about the murder, he admits his guilt. Kill this fist fighter and report back, then go back to the tradehouse to sell unneeded items collected along the way. If you're feeling confident about your combat skills, there's a cave of bandits across from the silt strider (big bug with long legs that will get you places fast) that you can attack. After you've done that, off to Balmora with you. You can either take the silt strider, or you can walk. Since you're not familiar with locations in the game, I recomend you take the silt strider the first time.

Once in Balmora, proceed to the North East corner of town and locate Cassius Cosaides' house. Go in and talk to him, tell him that you're ready for his orders until he gives you 200 gold.

Balmora is a great place to find things to do. For a steady train of quests, join a guild or a house. Local to Balmora are:
Mages Guild (West side of the river, up one flight of stairs)
Fighters Guild (Right next to the mages guild)
Theives Guild (In a bar in south east Balmora)
House hlaalu (West of the river, up two flights of stairs)

You can join all the guilds in the game (though they sometimes have conflicting goals), and one house. House Telvanni can be found on the Eastern island of Sadrith Mora (mages guild has a teleport service over to there). House Redoran can be found in Ald Rhun, two cities north of Balmora.

When you feel that your questing has made you strong enough to proceed with the main plot line, you can return to Cassius Cosaides in Balmora and ask for orders; he will lead you down most of the main plot line.

BTW, advancing to the head of a house will not only bring you a lavish dwelling allong the way, but will also make your life just a bit easier in a quest you have to perform near the end of the main plot line.
