Not entirely correct, though correct in some way.

It comes from the inside of the bark of a tropical tree native to Sri Lanka, was extremely popular throughout the whole of Medieval Europe. So not just Britain.

Then again, when people went over to settle in America they probably took Cinnamon with them, so we can take credit for giving America it's first taste of Cinnamon.
