Actually, if his resists kind of suck, I'd make him a 'Smoke' armor (Nef Lum).

Gives 75% DEF, 50 all resists and whatnot. It's not bad.

You might want to upgrade his damage later on, but at higher levels, it's the merc's Aura that you want, not his killing ability usually...
