Actually, RE Zero is still done in pre-rendered backgrounds. Capcom used a slightly advanced version of the graphics engine used in the RE1 Gamecube remake for RE Zero. You can switch between your characters at any time though, and you can also drop items wherever you want and come pick them back up later. I really want it, but I'm gonna wait a month or so before I pick it up.
