My proposal is not to make spells do less damage, its to decrease their maximum damage and increase minimum if you didn't already read. I prefer to be self-sufficient and not carry around potions...

And another thing about the skill gain: I was hit with over 20 flame strikes, 10 energy bolts, and 10 explosions at 84 resist, and I only gained 0.1... And this was while moving around the whole time.
