Memory Questions

Alright, so I got a computer off of craigslist for free, and it has a Pentium 4 1.5 ghz, and only 512mb of memory. I figured, shit memory can't be that expensive... so I start looking, and come to find out, it's going to cost $420!

Why is the PC800-45 memory so much more expensive? And that's only for 2 GHZ...

It's because PC800 is shitty ass RDram I think, i'm not sure if there is a DDRAM that is compatible with it... you might be fucked. That's probably why it was free..

Cheapest shit for that will prolly be on pricewatch, http://search.pricewatch.com/search?q=pc800&start=240

Dude. PC800 is RAMBUS. It is kind of similar to the VHS/Betamax or the HD-DVD/Bluray war. RAMBUS lost. That's why it's so expensive; it's basically a collectors item.

Use the PC to run a free distro of Linux or something.

I was going to say something like that as well, use it with a less-load OS. I seriously would not dump any money into that machine. For $420 you can buy a brand new fucking Dell with a monitor.

Not that I have a lot of experience with RAM, but the experience I have with it has taught me that the older RAM is, the more expensive it is. I've had to buy RAM for old computers here at work that cost a LOT more than new-age RAM.

Not only is it old, but it has been abandoned since like 2000.

heres my quiestion can i get a terebyte hd for my computer

D3V 2008-12-19 11:35 AM

Yes you can. Even the external ones are somewhat affordable now. I know during black friday they were actually very reasonable. HardDrive don't have any requirements after Win2k I believe, I think anything before that could only detect a ceratin amount, or something.

i know but internel because my usb's dont work and theres diff types of hd like sata

i'd need to know more info about your motherboard specifically to tell what will directly work on your computer.

Well, RAMBUS may have lost, but apparently they are still in business, and they are working on more memory things...

LOL! They are supposedly the "leaders" in the "high performance memory" market. http://www.rambus.com/us/
