Bob, Super Metroid is not a platformer. It's an action-adventure.

Hrm... I suppose I can see that.. I've just always thought of 2d Metroid as a platform.

The reason it's not a platformer is because that's not the the primary focus of the gameplay. Yeah, Samus jumps around, but if you fall off a platform, you don't plummet screaming to your death. The jumping is just there to add vertical depth to the game, not to really challenge your platforming skills. The main focus is on exploration and puzzle-solving to a lesser extent. That's an adventure.
