Ok, im arguing with some people about the last seen of the movie when the police officer is in the basement of the killers and filming the crime scene, but the scene was never properly secure (this is what i heard/read) and im not sure if he died but was definately attacked. Now the question is was this actual footage or made in a studio?

...yes...of course it was made in the studio. The events chronicled in all of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies are fabricated. The original and the recent remake are based on the 1950's Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, but "Leatherface" himself, his creepy family and the events of the movies never actually took place.

Is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre a true story?

There are many discussions on this point, but the truth is that it is not. Hollywood bills the film as being "inspired by a true story", not even "based on a true story". There was no chainsaw wielding Thomas Hewitt. There was however, a man who skinned his victims and wore their skin. This is the only part of the film that is based on truth.

It is a page all about Tobe Hooper, the man behind the first TCM film. On this page, he says that his inspiration for the film came as he stood in crowds of people next to a chainsaw rack, and had an idea how to get rid of the crowds! The story grew in his mind as he considered the murderer Ed Gein.

Ed Gein was a murderer in Wisconsin in the 1950s. He shot two women. These were the only two people he officially killed. There was talk that he killed others as well, but this has not been proved. He was also a grave robber. He took both his killed and stolen victims home with him and strung them up like deer. He skinned them and gutted them like animals. When the police searched his house, they found many shrunken heads and a body still hanging up. They found skin shirts complete with breasts, skin leggings, and belts decorated with nipples. They also found lamps and chairs made from skin and bones.

Other possibilities: There are many people who say that they know the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is true. They remember it, they've seen the files, they know the survivor is in a mental institution. They are wrong. It may be true that they remember an event etc, but it is a different event. Many murders take place and some of them may bare a resemblance to the story of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But they are not the ones that the story is based on. It is just a coincidence. I am not doubting that what these people say is true, but they do not relate to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
