Argh I can't figure this out
 

Well I never got taught geometry so this is probably stupid anyways...

"The hands of a clock are pointed at the 12:44 position (i.e. hour hand between 12 and 1, minute hand between 8 and 9). Determine the angle the minute hand and hour hand create."

I got the easier one (7:30) which is 45 degrees. I just can't figure out this 12:44 one.

Well, I'm going to take an attempt at it. Sice a clock is a circle, which is 360 degrees, divided into 60 even parts, that would make each part 6 degrees. So to get the minute hand, 44*6, which equals 264. Now, the hour hand has to be somewhere in between 0 and 30 degrees (since 1 o' clock would be 30.) Now you could do it as a proportion. 44/60 = x/30, so I think x should be 22. Now, if you subtract 264-22, you get 242. I don't know if that's the correct answer or not, but I think that should work.

Also, 118 (360-242) would probably work. Just make sure you check my arithmetic.

Makes sense to me..but i totally forgot how to do that. For me that was like 9 years ago.

Ok, I believe the answer is 118 degrees. Your answer might be right, I'm not sure. What I did was "pretend" it was a 90 degree angle (hour hand at 12, minute at 9). Then I calculated the differences (22 degrees on the hour hand to get to its correct spot, 6 degrees on the minute hand). 90 + 22 + 6 = 118.

I skip geometry in my high school went straight to advance algebra. If you hate it see if your school have block system that mean you take two class of geometry in first semester if you pass them then you take two class of adv algebra in second semester.

When the minute hand hits :44, the clock has completed 73 1/3 percent of a full rotation to a new hour. That means that the minute hand would have moved 73 1/3 percent to its 1 hour mark, since the hour is 73 1/3 percent over. This means that the total movement of the hour hand would be 26 degrees to the right, as it needs to have made 73 1/3 percent of the 30 degree trip to get to the 1. (every five seconds a number pops up, and since each minute is 6 degrees.. you can do the math). Also, 73 1/3 percent of 360 , or the degrees that the minute hand has moved to get to 12:44 from 12:00 would be 264 degrees. Take 264 -22 and you get 242 degrees of movement.

60 marks around the clock, being a full circle gives you a seperation of 6 degrees in between minute-marks.

The 9:00 position is at a right angle to the 12:00 position, and you're 1 minute below that, giving you 96...

The hour hand moves to the right as the minute hand gets closer to the 12....... the clock doesnt just all of a sudden go from the number 12 to 1.

im doin friekin modular arithmetic, its really weird, but we somehow transitioned into something really gay, with like midpoints and reflections, mind you im only 12 years old, and im in very advanced classes that might be too hard for my abilities, i have to go to the highschool every morning just to take math, but enough about me, i think mj's answer is right
