Best Graphics Editor?

Which do you think is the best graphics editor?

Randuin 2003-07-22 04:01 PM

It is not the tool, it's the artist

Tai 2003-07-22 05:12 PM

If you're talking about editing, it is the tool. There are simple things editors (as far as *editing* goes) that you simply can't do with lesser programs - the opposite is not true if its drawing or painting though, that's much much more powerful then simple editing.

Editing? Photoshop probably.
Painting? Several, photoshop is one of them.
Drawing? It's up to their preference and level of skill.

Yeah, the way it seems, he is talking about Photo Manip... which I would go with PhotoShop.

If you want to do your own graphics... Photoshop, Maya, 3D Max, and Lightwave are good.

Chruser 2003-07-23 05:51 AM

Tai got me to use Painter 24/7, which is a nice tool, methinks. Photoshop would still be my weapon of choice, although LW is great to work with for photorealism, if used properly. :P

Acer 2003-07-23 05:57 AM

I like Photoshop for sig types, but I really like to design stuff and LW gives me that power. Like my car, when I am done, im going to change it a lot to look the way I want it.

`Insolence` 2003-07-24 03:02 AM

Thsi is off topic, but where do i do LW, or Maya, are they freeware, or do i need to be nasty and download it on Kaaza?

Chruser 2003-07-24 03:25 AM

You need to buy the programs if you ever intend to use them professionally. None of them are free, unfortunately.

Heh.. ^_^

Gmax is free, and it's very similar to 3DSMax.

I stand by Paintshop Pro. It's affordable, more efficient than Photoshop, and from a side by side comparison, is for more experienced digital artists. People who produce images that aren't necessarily JPEGs. Roofle.

WetWired 2003-07-24 09:02 AM

Yes, PSP is great. It can do most things Photoshop can do, do them quicker (by quicker I mean fewer user steps to get to them), and costs a ton less.

Chruser 2003-07-24 03:30 PM

"Jasc PSP, Adobe Photoshop and Corel Photopaint are all good programs. I personally believe that a talented user could use any of them to produced the required results. I would look at PSP first simply for value for money. If wanted skills that looked good on a resume go with Corel or Adobe. Adobe seems to be the preffered option there though there is not much between them."

Photoshop is the industry standard. I personally believe one of the reasons why it's so much more expensive than PSP is that a ton of things are geared towards it. Although both of the programs are highly compitable with each other, you will likely be required to know PS in some studios if you want a design job. The knowledge about both programs translate over to the other, however. If you know PSP really well, then going to Photoshop shouldn't be too much of a mess, and vice versa.

I personally use Photoshop 7 because I just prefer it more, but Animation Shop (which comes with PSP) is another great tool I use at times. If you have the money, get PS, although PSP can do pretty much the exact same things (in fact, it even has a lot better gif/jpeg compression tools, while PS has a lot more plugin filters).

If a user is looking to get into the mainstream of 2D editing, they will usually choose PS (how they get it is their business ;)).

I myself use PS7, and I love it. I just don't have the patience to learn to use Lightwave or 3DSM. Photoshop was an easy to learn type of deal, there really isn't much to it once you learn the basics, it all comes to you easier.

D3V 2003-07-29 03:15 AM

I'd like to learn how to use LW, I think i'll take those classes from zelaron.

Acer 2003-07-29 05:36 AM

I would assume people pick it since I can find a lot more help with it out there than others. PS has many tuts, and are easy to find, that is why I picked it.

Joe Castagna 2003-09-09 04:14 PM

Photo shop and illustrator man they do it all

RoboticSilence 2003-09-09 04:36 PM

Gmax is free and is similar to 3dsmax because it basically is 3dsmax. Discreet released gmax for people to use as a 3ds-lite for modders.

CAClark 2003-09-09 05:11 PM

For post processing work, photoshop is definately king. PSP and the like are good, but not much competition for Photoshop.

As for 3D, so many cool tools, Lightwave & XSI are my weapons of choice.

Just out of interest, Newtek have a free version of LW called the discovery addition. You can download it from their website.

Cheers!

I've been CGing for near a decade, and to date, I've never heard a more than laughable reason why Photoshop is superior to Paintshop. The -only- thing I like better about Photoshop is the large brush size limit. Of course, JASC upped the maximum brush width to 500 pixels in PSP 8, but PSP 8 = JASC PHOTOSHOP. ARGH! They fucking ruined the interface!
